The Z16A was not supposed to exist. In the early 1990s, Mitsubishi looked at what Nissan was doing with the Z32 and what Toyota was planning with the A80, and decided to build something that outengineered them both. The result was a twin-turbo AWD grand tourer with active aerodynamics, all-wheel steering, and 320 horsepower – a level of technical ambition that most European manufacturers would not match for another decade.

The VR-4 designation stood for Viscous Real-time 4WD, but it undersold what the car actually was. Under the bonnet, the 6G72TT twin-turbo 3.0L V6 delivered power to all four wheels through a system that read the road and adjusted in real time. It could accelerate, corner, and brake with a composure that left far more expensive machinery scrambling for grip. On the Wangan – the elevated expressway that traces Tokyo Bay – it was exactly at home: a car built for speed on smooth tarmac under city lights.
