The E46 M3 arrived in 2000 with one purpose – to be the definitive driver’s car. The S54 inline-six revved to 8,000 rpm and produced 343 horsepower without a single turbocharger in sight. The chassis was so well balanced that professional drivers used it as a benchmark and amateur drivers used it as a teacher. Built until 2006, it remains the car most M engineers point to when asked which generation got it right.

This design captures the E46 in Phoenix Yellow – the colour that made this generation iconic – at Spa-Francorchamps Eau Rouge at dusk. The Belgian forest rises dark behind it. Mist curls off the wet tarmac. A purple twilight sky hangs over one of the most famous corners in motorsport, and the M3 sits in the middle of it like it owns the place.
